Papal States / Vatican

Below is a list of the coins of the Papal States / Vatican that I have. Rather than just repeating the usual size/weight characteristics, I have provided a link to the Numista site for those attributes. What I have tried to do is give more context of the coin and relay some historical events that either the images represent or were occuring at the time of minting. None of these coins are particulary rare or expensive - but it's quite possible to get a lot out of a collection for very little outlay. I plan to add to this page in the near future.

It's probably worth noting that I am neither Catholic nor religious so this view is a purely secular one.

I hope this is useful and informative.

Roman Senate (1188-1252)

Strictly speaking the below coin is not issued under a ruling Pope, but it does fall into the Papal States category so I have included it here. It was issued by the Roman Senate (1188-1252) which was a semi-autonomous political entity also knows as the Commune of Rome. Clement III concluded an agreement with this entity in 1187 whereby the Papacy regained some of the authority is lost in 1143 (due to an imposition on looting of Trivoli after it was subjugated under Innocent II and subsequent rebellion) The below example seems to have a sun and moon either side of the central S rather than 2 moons in the upper quadrants of the reverse inner section as indicated in references..

Pius IV was born Giovanni Angelo de' Medici. The coat of arms can properly be described as , Or (gold field), five torteaux (roundles) in orle gules (red), a sixth in chief azure (blue), charged with three fleurs-de-lis (lilies) or (gold). The overall heraldic achievement has the usual crossed keys to the kingdom of heaven and triple tiara, which are characteristic of all papal coats of arms.

It is worth taking a moment to dissect what the heraldic achievement consists of;
1. The escutcheon is the central shield bearing the coat of arms.
2. The crest is the device placed above the helmet or crown.
3. The helmet is often styalised and represents rank or status. In these cases it is the Pontifs/archbishops triregnum/capello romano that is used.
4. The mantling is the decorative cloth draped around the helmet. In these cases it is the cord and tassels tied to the end of the keys that is used.
5. The supporters are figures, often animals that stand either side of the escutcheon though this feature is not seen here.
6. The coat of arms is what is contained in the escutcheon but a heraldic achievement is the entirety of the display.
7. The motto is a short phrase associated with the bearer.

While coats of arms served a necessary function in medieval times, their continued use and subsequent embellishment to full heraldic achievements may be seen as somewhat egotistical but their purpose continues to be maintaining family tradition and in that they are very successful.

Mullets of eight points- Eight-pointed stars. Three and three - three stars above the bend and three below.

Alexander VII was born Fabio Chigi. His coat of arms is more complex and can be described as "Azure, six mountains (coupeaux) Argent, arranged 3, 2, 1, surmounted by an eight-pointed star Or quartered with, Azure, an oak tree Or." However Alexander VII only emphesised the six mountains part of his formal coat of arms as he thought the oak tree was already closely associated with Sixtus IV and Julius II and he was very keen that Rome should have lots of representation of his specific tenure.

Clement X was born Emilio Bonaventura Altieri and came from legal background and was nearly 80 when he was elected Pope. His coat of arms can be described as "Azure, six mullets of six points Or.". Gubbio mint
Gubbio is an ancient town in the Province of Perugia in the Umbria region. The town boasts the largest Christmas tree in the world each year and has a quaint tradition of being awarded "madman" of the city by running around the Fontana dei Matti three times while being soaked by locals.

This coin features the coat of arms of Bologna, rather than that of the Pope. Here the shield is in 4 quarters, The first and fourth feature a red cross on a white field (Argent across Gules). This is the historic coat ot arms of the commune of Bologna representing the city itself. In the second and third quarters is the word "LIBERTAS" in gold on a blue field. (Azure, the word LIBERTAS Or) and this symbolises the people of Bologna and their persuit of freedom. At the top of the achievement is a "Capo d'Angio" which is a horizontal band with a blue field and gold fleur-de-lis. This represents the city's historical ties to the Angevin dynasty,

The Camerlengo (always a cardinal) is a high-ranking official in the Catholic Church who holds a unique and important position, particularly during the interregnum period between the death or resignation of a Pope and the election of a new one. He is responsible for managing the property and finances as well as officially confirms the Pope's death, sealing the papal apartments, and making arrangements for the Conclave, the meeting of cardinals to elect a new Pope. Sede Vacante 1823

The heraldic achievement here is one from Cardinal Bartolomeo Pacca's family. It consists of a knight holding upturned sword in right hand against a gold background in the uppermost section (chief). A knight holding upturned sword in right hand against an azure background in the middle section (fess) and a skull and crossbones against a black background in the bottom section (base). The knights are representative of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. Either side shows a cord with 6 tassels following the use of the mantle design in non religious heraldry. the usual crossed keys are above the coat of arms with the papal umbrella superinposed. Gregory XVI (1831-1846)

the heraldic achievement of Gregory XVI is as follows. The dexter (right) half of the shield represents the Camoldese Congregation of the Order of Saint Benedict, to which the Pope belonged. while The sinister (left) part is the arms of the Cappellari Family. The family Coat of Arms consists of azure chief with black cap, an argent fess with 3 stars and a sky blue base with flying dove holding an olive branch in beak. This latter however does not appear in the arms used for the Papal heraldic achievement.

Pius IX (1846-1878)

The shield in the coat of arms here shows a form of Marshalling called quartering - joining together of two separate coats of arms to acknowledge certain ancestors in a specific way. This heraldic device was first observed in Spain in the 13th century. The crest is, naturally, the Papal triple crown or triregnum. This coat of arms has very little in the way of mantling in that the crossed keys and trailing cords provide much the same function from a design point of view.

In 1866 the Scudo currency was replaced by the Lira (to align with Italian currency) The exchange rate was 1 Scudo to 5.357 Lira.

In 1866 Pius IX decided to join the Latin Monetary Union in partnership with the Italian Lira and the French Franc. It replaced the scudo at a rate of 5.375 Lira to 1 Scudo. While the Italian lira was subdivided into 100 Centesimi, the Papal states decided to run a dual currency where 1 Lira was subdivided into both 100 centesimi and 20 Soldi. When the Papal States were disolved and subsummed into Italy in 1970 the Italian Lira was the currency used.

The Papal States were definitively dissolved in 1870 when Italian troops captured Rome and annexed its remaining territories. This marked the end of the Pope's temporal power and the unification of Italy. No coins were issued by a Pope until the formal recognition of the Vatican City in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty.

John XXIII (1958-1963)

The coat of arms of John XIII (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli)consists of a silver chief (the uppermost portion) with the symbol of Venice (winged and haloed leopard left) with right front paw upon an open gospal inscribed with "PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEUS" (Peace to you Mark my evangelist). A red base with a horizontal silver bar, a silver fleur-de-lis on upper right and left of base and tower in centre extending virticially through all base sections. The crossed Keys and the tripple crown complete the heraldic achievement. The Leopard (lion) is a symbol for Mark (the disciple) and alludes to how Cardinal Roncalli was the Patriarch of Venice before being elected pope. The tower is from the Romcalli family which was based in Lombardy. Fleur-de-lis are styalised lilies and these represent Romcalli's tenure as archbishop of both Asia Minor and Mesembria.

Coins from the Vatican City have been made available to collectors as sets. Some sets are very common and can be obtained for little outlay, while others are quite rare and command high prices. The below coins are from those sets which have been photographed separately.

For Paul VI the Papal heraldic achievement is comprised of;
the Crossed Keys - symbolising the authority of the Pope, which is further taken from a Biblical passage where Jesus gives Peter "the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven",
the Papal tiara - a triple headded headpiece of the Pope's spiritual and temporal power and the three levels those manifest in the Church, the state and the universal church.
the escutcheon - The shield or coat of arms, with three fleur-de-lis and 6 upright lozenges. One suggestion is that the Pope's name is Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini and Montini means "From the mountain" The 6 upright lozengs in the form of a mountain may be an expression of this surname.
Early sets concentrated on depicting the Church's focus on virtues. There are the four Cardinal virtues of Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance, and the three Theological virtues of faith hope and charity. These seven virtues were seen as the anthesis of the seven deadly sins.

It is worth noting that these coins are minted to varying standards of quality. Some, particually those minted in alumimum are prone to striking issues mever mind corrosion. Many of the sets follow a theme or style which will be gone into more below.

Paul VI - 1964 Set

The theme of this set is the 6 virtues of the Church - Faith, Hope, Charity, Prudence, Justice and Fortitude. The smallest two denominations have the Papal heraldic achievements as an obverse while the remainder of the set uses a bust of Paul VI. The direction the bust is facing does seem somewhat random for this set.

Temperance seated pouring libation from jug in right hand into patera in left. The libation was a ritual act in ancient Roman culture, often performed before a meal or a sacrifice to honor the gods and seek their favor. Clearly this imagery has been used and modified down through the centuries with coins from as early as the 3rd century BC showing this type of image

This image of Providence (Divine guidance) standing and appears to be holding the Rod of Asclepius in her left hand. The Rod of Asclepius is a symbol more usually associated with healing. Providence is holding a mirror in her right hand. The meaning here is that the mirror reflects the past and the future and learning from the past can be used for good in the future. Additionally it represents selfawareness and clarity where holding up a mirrir to humanity can help it understand itself and it's place in the world.

This may seem like a strange image to have on a Vatican City coin. However there is a longstanding belief that a Pelican would stab itself in the chest to allow it's young to feed on its blood. John Paul II - 1979 Set

This set commemorates Peace and the Cardinal virtues. It's the first time that the official John Paul II heraldic symbology is seen on coins. The Coat of Arms is of a blue shield with an off-centre gold cross. A gold M to the sinister base field. The Large M on the shield represents Mary as John Paul II was a strong Marian believer and this arrangement of letter and cross is known as the Marian Cross (symbolic of Mary looking up at the cross).
John Paul chose the motto "Totus Tuus" while a cardinal and retained it when he became Pape. It means "all yours" and it again part of his Marian devotion.

John Paul II - 2000 Set

Every 25 years the Vatican has has a jubilee or holy year. These are set in the calander so 2025 will also be a holy year or jubilee with this one in the year 2000 focusing on the blessing of children. The tradition was started with Pope Boniface VIII in the 1300's. Extraordinary holy years can also be called by the Pope to mark other events.
