Rome mint The shield in the coat of arms here shows a form of Marshalling called quartering - joining together of two separate coats of arms to acknowledge certain ancestors in a specific way. This heraldic device was first observed in Spain in the 13th century. The crest is, naturally, the Papal triple crown or triregnum. This coat of arms has very little in the way of mantling in that the crossed keys and trailing cords provide much the same function from a design point of view. |

Rome mint In 1866 Pius IX decided to join the Latin Monetary Union in partnership with the Italian Lira and the French Franc. It replaced the scudo at a rate of 5.375 Lira to 1 Scudo. While the Italian lira was subdivided into 100 Centesimi, the Papal states decided to run a dual currency where 1 Lira was subdivided into both 100 centesimi and 20 Soldi. When the Papal States were disolved and subsummed into Italy in 1970 the Italian Lira was the currency used. |

Rome mint Designed by Tommaso Gismondi and engraved by Guerino Mattia Monassi. This may seem like a strange image to have on a Vatican City coin. However there is a longstanding belief that a Pelican would stab itself in the chest to allow it's young to feed on its blood. This was enough of an analogy to the Christian narrative of Christ on the cross to adopt as useful symbolism. |
