Notes: This reverse scene depicts one of the most famous of all Roman myths, that of its founding. When the last king of Alba Longa was overthrown by his brother, he made his niece a Vestal Virgin to ensure there would be no heirs. When she had the twins (by the god Mars) her uncle cast them adrift on the Tiber. When they came ashore (at Rome) a wolf suckled them until they were found, and raised by a shepherd. Romulus later killed Remus to become sole ruler and founder of the great city
