Adolph of Schaumburg-Lippe was born on Augues 1st 1817 and was the son of Prince Georg and Princess Ids of Waldeck. He succeeded the throne on November 21st 1960. On the 25th October 1844 he married Princess Hermina of Schaumburg-Lippe. The line of Lippe was descended from a count of the same name who lived in the 16th century and who acquired some small territorial possessions in Westphalia. It was only in 1807 that the two counts of Schaumburg-Lippe and Lippe-Detmold were elevated to the rank of princes and became independent rulers. The attained this rank by championing Napoleon as members of the Rheinbund. They would have been struck off the list of rulers by the Congress of Vienna but for the protection of Prince Metternich who preferred having two crowned heads more in Europe to giving their territories to Prussia. Adolph received some 25,000 annually or nearly three quarters of the revenue of the territory. However at the time this was not sufficient and it was known that his possessions were heavily mortgaged (to the tune of about 2,980,000 or 500,000) The Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe retains all of the legislative and executive powers and there was very limited representative institutions. In the territory there lived 30,774 inhabitants on some 212 square miles.
